Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Treatment in Prahran

man resting peacefully after sleep apnoea treatment in prahranSleep apnoea is more common than you might think, affecting around 1 in 10 Australians. Studies estimate that up to three million Australians suffer from some form of sleep apnoea, many of whom go undiagnosed and untreated. This condition can seriously impact health by causing poor sleep quality and fatigue. If left untreated, it can even increase the risk of severe issues like heart disease, high blood pressure and depression.

Our dentists in Prahran, VIC, understand the far-reaching effects of sleep apnoea and snoring on your quality of life. That’s why we offer advanced, effective treatments focusing on the root causes so you can breathe easier, sleep soundly and enjoy better health. With our holistic approach, you can trust that your comfort, safety and overall well-being are at the heart of everything we do.

What Is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea involves repeated breathing pauses during sleep, preventing one from getting quality rest. For many, the effects go beyond just feeling tired—children may struggle to focus, while adults face increased risks of workplace or road accidents due to fatigue.

Sleep apnoea is also linked to cardiovascular problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. It’s also associated with reduced social functioning and mental health challenges, such as depression. This wide range of health effects is why we’re so committed to providing effective, compassionate care for sleep apnoea.

Benefits of Treating Sleep Apnoea and Snoring

Treating sleep apnoea can make a world of difference—not just for your sleep, but for your overall health and wellness. We offer treatments that go beyond temporary fixes. We're here to help you achieve restful, uninterrupted sleep. Here are three key benefits of addressing sleep apnoea.
Better Sleep Quality
With effective sleep apnoea treatment, you’ll experience deeper, more restful sleep. This means more time spent in the restorative stages of sleep, where the body repairs itself and recharges for the day ahead.
Better Heart Health
Untreated sleep apnoea can put immense strain on your heart by repeatedly disrupting your breathing and reducing oxygen levels throughout the night. Treating this can reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Better Focus and Mood
Treating sleep apnoea can significantly improve concentration, memory and mood by allowing your brain to fully recharge overnight. This boost in focus and positivity can help you enjoy a better quality of life every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleep apnoea can be surprisingly hard to spot on your own—after all, it happens while you're fast asleep! But some telltale signs can give you a clue:

  • Loud snoring
  • Gasping or choking sounds
  • Chronic headaches, especially in the morning
  • Dry mouth
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Difficulty with concentration and focus
  • Frequently waking up at night
  • Nodding off during the day

People with sleep apnoea often have no idea they're experiencing these symptoms. Usually, a partner or family member notices the loud snoring or gasping sounds that signal disrupted sleep. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, it might be time to check in with a dental professional trained in sleep apnoea, like Dr Chris Darby.

Our Approach to Sleep Apnoea Treatment

Our dental clinic offers a variety of treatment options tailored to your needs: woman after a good's night sleep due to sleep apnoea treatment in prahran

  • Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (nCPAP) — This common treatment uses a steady flow of air to keep your airway open, ensuring consistent oxygen flow. However, while effective, some people find it uncomfortable or challenging to use consistently.
  • Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) — MADs work by gently adjusting your jaw to open the airway, but these devices can sometimes lead to dental issues, such as tooth movement or bite changes. Additionally, TMJ inflammation can be an obstacle for those who grind their teeth and require careful management.

How We Personalise Your Treatment

Here’s how our process works to ensure you receive the best care:

  • Initial Consultation — On your first visit, we’ll assess your condition and review your sleep test, as we can’t diagnose sleep apnoea disorders. We’ll conduct a Jaw Joint Vibrational Analysis and Structural Testing to confirm that your mouth is prepared for a MAD. A rhinometer test will evaluate nasal blockages to see if MAD is the right option for you.
  • Custom Bite and Airway Positioning — During the second visit, we’ll record your bite and determine the optimal position to keep your airway open. Two x-rays help us find the ideal alignment for your MAD.
  • Device Fitting and Follow-Up — Once your MAD is crafted, we’ll fit the device and closely monitor your progress to ensure it effectively enhances your sleep quality and comfort.
