What’s the difference between a gum lift and crown lengthening?

In most cases, a gum lift is an aesthetic treatment, like contouring. It reimagines your gumline, making it more symmetrical or improving on a gummy smile (too much gum showing when you smile).

Crown lengthening is more of a functional concern that addresses short or worn teeth. When teeth are short, the bite is not level, and specific teeth are taxed with most of the chewing, which can lead to premature wear and tear. An unlevel bite can also put undue stress on your jaw joints.

Consulting with Your Cosmetic Dentist in Prahran

Your dentist can examine your teeth and gums to ensure gum treatment or crown lengthening is suitable for you.

For gum lifts, we may use laser dentistry, which is a minimally invasive method. It relies on precise lasers, so you’ll have little to no downtime in most cases. With lasers instead of scalpels, you may have little to no bleeding.

For crown lengthening, your dentist may use specific restorations, such as tooth crowns, to level your bite across all teeth.
